Non-smooth dynamics of buckling based metainterfaces: Rocking-like motion and bifurcations

The non-smooth dynamics is investigated for an elastic planar metainterface composed by two layers of buckling elements, each one allowing motion on side only. Through the analogy between and unilateral contact assuming no-bouncing at impact, relevant degrees freedom system reduced to that a single degree governed piecewise-smooth differential equation. has strong similarities with rocking rigid blocks displays several types dynamic bifurcations in presence oscillatory forces, including period doubling, branch point cycle, grazing, as well quasi-periodic chaotic responses. Moreover, multistable response found be broaden conditions representative monostable states within quasi-static setting, disclosing multistability anticipation dynamics. wide landscape based provides novel theoretical framework exploited design mechanical devices vibration attenuation energy harvesting.
